Usage
Instructions for NOTE: When translating use the imperative
corresponding to the formal version of "you" in the target
language, if applicable. For example, when there are instructions use the imperative.
In Spanish you would translate "Use this manual to learn..." as
"Utilice este manual
para aprender..." The External View files that you have received are
either in Word or HTML format, i.e., you can either work in them in an
appropriate word processor or HTML editor. The specifications of the HTML format are fairly robust: you can use
"intrusive HTML editors" such as Microsoft Word without the risk of corrupting files for a later
reimport. The files can contain up to five different columns (ID, Source,
Target, Comment, Status). Here is some important information on what to do and
what not to do: ·
Please DO NOT modify the files' names. ·
In
Word go to TOOLS | OPTIONS VIEW and activate (check) ALL. This will allow you
to see formatting marks. Do NOT skip this instruction. You must do this! ·
There
must not be paragraph marks (¶) inside the cells. Do not enter soft returns
(manual line breaks). Before delivering the translation to
us please make sure there are no paragraph marks in your document.
Proceed as follows: in Word perform a search going to the EDIT menu | FIND |
MORE | SPECIAL and select PARAGRAPH MARK | FIND NEXT. ·
Do NOT change the format of the font, paragraph, or the table in the document you
received. ·
Do not
modify the first two columns (ID and SOURCE). These
will be needed to reimport the document back into Déja Vu X. ·
Please
translate numerals using numerals (e.g. if the source has the number 3 use
the number 3 and not the word “three”) and words that refer to numbers as
words (e.g. five for five) in the target language. ·
Make sure that spaces
between words are the same in the SOURCE and TARGET columns. ·
Do
not leave blank spaces after or before codes in the TARGET
column if they are not present in the SOURCE column. ·
Make sure the capitalization
of the first word in the SOURCE and TARGET columns matches, unless your target language requires a different
capitalization. ·
You may paste the contents of the second column (SOURCE)
into the third column (TARGET) if it is easier for you to work by overwriting the
source text This may be especially advisable if you work on a text with a lot
of code markers (code marker are numbers enclosed by French brackets, such
as: {78}).

As a general rule, if you find a code in the middle of a word you can put in
some other place, for example before or after the word. Do not put it in the
middle of a word in your translation. ·
In many cases the code markers do not represent any
special formatting. If you have doubts about where to position the codes
check the original document from which the text was extracted to see whether
the codes represent any formatting (bold, italics, hyperlink, etc.). If the
codes do not represent any format in the original document you can position
them where you consider convenient. ·
If
the text in two consecutive cells in the SOURCE column seems to belong to a single sentence split in two
consecutive cells, please make note of this in the COMMENTS column. This does
NOT apply to sentences divided by a semicolon (;) or colon (:) except for
some languages (e.g. Japanese). For example, if there is a single sentence
split in three rows put a note in each
cell of the COMMENTS column: in the first row put JOIN 1, in the second row
put JOIN 2, etc. ·
Use all code markers of the source in the
target text The code markers contain non-textual information (such
as formatting and graphics) that Déja Vu X will use
when processing the file. This means that the code markers must retain the
same position as they had in the original text. For instance, a string such
as: Our goal is to help you achieve that
success by providing the most {23}professional and
cost-effective{24} language support possible. might be translated into German as follows: Es ist unser Ziel, Ihnen diesen Erfolg zu ermoglichen,
indem unsere Sprachteams Sie auf {23}professionellste und
kostengUnstigste{24} Weise unterstUtzen. Note that the code markers enclose the same terms in the
source that they enclosed in the target text. The formatting information
stored in them will be applied to whatever terms they enclose. They may, for
instance, store information indicating that professional and cost-effective
will be a hyperlink to another website. The
phrase within these markers in the target text will form that hyperlink. Leave each code marker with its respective number and
corresponding word or phrase. For example, if the phrase {54}white{55}
and {56}black{57} would have to be reversed for its German translation,
the code markers would need to be placed as follows: {56}schwarz{57} und {54}weiß{55} Note that the External View
file may only contain unique sentences. Sentences
that appear repeatedly in the source file may be automatically removed.
Please refer to the original source document for context if there seems to be
a missing string. You may request a copy of the
source document if it was omitted from your materials. Please contact your project manager if you have any
